Name: Meredith Fairchild
Character journal name: theteacher
Your photo-credit/PB: Simon Woods
Age:
Nationality: English.
Allegiance and why: To crown and country. Meredith comes from a family long linked to the army and he feels deeply patriotic towards his country.
Social Status and/or Occupation: Upper-merchant class but he works as a tutor due to a falling out with his older brother.
Brief physical description of your character: Meredith isn’t as imposing as his older brother’s but he’s hardly without his own charms. Blessed with a cheeky smile and more than a share of his mother’s good looks he’s enchanted more than his fair share of young ladies. He dresses rather conservatively, as fitting in station within the households he works.
Brief description of your characters history, including family: Meredith was born into a large family, the fourth child and son of Diana Fairchild and her husband, an industrialist who had built up a thriving factory making rifles for the British army. His younger sister, Joanna, was born a few years later to complete the family.
Meredith was a studious child who enjoyed his schooling best. His favourite subject was history at which he excelled but he also enjoyed poetry especially Milton and Wordsworth.
Meredith preferred the company of his sister and mother to that of his older brothers Gordon, Benjamin and James, and although he was a good son and his father gave him all he could have wanted their relationship wasn’t especially close. His father preferred his eldest son, training him to take over the family business.
Meredith went to university and studied history at the age of eighteen. While away Benjamin brought a commission in the army and left home to make a name for himself, rising to the rank of major but that was not the only change in the family. His father’s health began to fail quite rapidly and then man retired, shutting himself away in the family home and becoming dictatorial and cold, monopolising his wife and daughter and leaving the running of the factory to Gordon.
Meredith returned from university at odds with the family. While away he had been introduced to new ideas and saw ways they could improve the business but Gordon was frightened that the investments it would take to make those changes would cripple them and the company would never recover so he stalled, promising to implement them but never doing so. At the same time James disappeared, taking with him a large amount of money and they received only a few sparse letters from him over the next months, always asking for more money to be sent.
Meredith began to fell suffocated at home, trapped by both his father’s mood swings and Gordon’s inability to change. He too left but instead of leading a hedonistic life off the family money like James was doing Meredith advertised in the paper as a tutor and took a job with a well-respected family, moving in to special quarters provided for him. He sends half of his payment each month home to the family for his father’s care, although living away from home he doesn’t want the family to think he’s abandoned them.
Sometimes he still meets with his mother and sister, taking them out to dinner or tea. Joanna has taken over from him, trying to influence how the factory should be run but has even less luck that Meredith on account of her sex.
One or two plots which you would like to play out in the community: Meredith’s continuing problems with his family. Something with his employer.
Are there any other characters you would like to see in the game? For instance, family, friends of your character?: His father, Gordon, Joanna, James and Benjamin.
